WHAT'S MY STYLE
Bobby Knight

Profiling a Hardwood Warrior:

It shocked the sporting world this week, but not those familiar with the man. Indiana University fired its men's head basketball coach, Bobby Knight, after what the University called, "a pattern of unacceptable behavior." Bobby Knight has been a college basketball icon for 3 decades at Indiana. His fiery temper got him in trouble many times, the most memorable being tossing a folding chair across the floor while arguing with a referee and grabbing a player by the neck in anger (caught on videotape, of course).

Bobby Knight

To us, his actions in violating the so-called "zero tolerance" policy were unavoidable, given what we believe to be his ANSIR® Profile, Diligent /Realist /Sentinel. Read this Profile yourSelf and see if you don't recognize innate Style strengths well-suited to meet the physical and tactical rigors of coaching college basketball -- and consistently winning.

This is a "get things done" Profile, for sure, and Bobby Knight certainly did that. Although Indiana hadn't made it past the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament since 1994, the Hoosiers had won two National Championships under Knight. With Diligent handling the details of his motion offense and the complexities of his defense, Realist to inspire with an edge, and Sentinel to cling to what he KNEW worked, this is the personality of a winning coach. But while his "my way or the highway" persona often created magic on the court, it extracted a high price from those around him outside the arena. To Sentinels, once an enemy, always an enemy, and this was evident in Knight's behavior and comments made after the firing, including the interview with ESPN. Intensely loyal to players who worked as hard as he believed they should and to what he believed were "real" supporters and fans, Knight has little room for those who disagreed and especially for those who dared to express that disagreement behind his back. Knight is classic Realist. The big brother. Passionate. Strength of character. And that darned explosive temper. Well, we can all look the other way if the guy's winning, can't we?

There's great potential for charm in this Profile, depending on how it views those nearby. There is also great potential for harm here, if the internal governor is granted license. Bobby Knight. Diligent /Realist /Sentinel. Unemployed...but hardly for long. It did strike us odd that Coach Knight's salary was in low $100k's. A pittance paid to him compared to what he earned for Indiana University all those years. Hardly in it for the money now, was he? Read this Profile. You've likely watched his Achilles' heel in full-blown action this past week, but don't kid yourSelf. If you only learned of Coach Knight through the media, you've not met the real man. His words are honest, his anger is real. This Profile does not tone down or mince words to please. As for pussyfoots? NOT!
