Unicorns
Valleys of pearlescent mist,
Painted a glowing golden-fawn,
Perhaps so lightly kissed
By the gentle brush of dawn
Perfect teardrops glimmer,
Rolling off the great willow leaves,
Tiny dewdrops, all a-shimmer,
Pooling 'neath the swaying trees
A subtle breeze stirs the scene,
Bringing in its wake
The leaves of summers long since seen,
When rain still danced upon the lake
The lake was great and clear,
And gleamed with unearthly light,
Creatures from afar drew near
To revel in the awesome sight
The silver steeds slowly arrived,
One by one at the waters shore,
Of this the prophets had contrived,
For here were the horses of ancient lore
When the lake was born,
So too was their reign,
The reign of the Unicorn,
And beauty such as none other could attain
Valleys then lush,
Fields of tempting dreams,
Fell upon those starry nights into a silent hush,
When the Unicorns danced among the streams.
As the fingers of dawn
Began to rake across the sky
One would halt upon the lawn,
To bid the night goodbye
In valleys of pearlescent mist
One could be seen to stand,
Wise old eyes watching the river's twist,
And the crystal snow upon the land.
Many suns have risen since,
Each without salute,
For the unicorns returned to their province,
Leaving with the last echo of the rain's subtle flute
Lightening breaks across the valley,
The heavens covered by a storm's dark cape,
An eerie light dances through the fearsome rally,
Taking upon itself a shape…
The dry earth yawns,
The rain soothing its battered skin,
The dust becomes an emerald lawn,
The thunder rising to a din
The cycle begins anew this day,
The Unicorns return,
For dreams are ready once again to play,
And this world is ready now to learn...
