The Measure of All Things
I look up to the clouds
and stare at the sky.
So much to behold-:
a universe beyond my
grasp, my wonder.
How far does it go?
Is there an end,
or just a beginning?
Mortal man seems so
small and insignificant.
We are but pebbles
on the beach, washed
up on the shores of this
planet spinning around in
an ocean of stars.
Is this but a dream and
I but a dreamer?
Will my questions go
unanswered as I live
out my lifetime?
What is the distance from
the Earth to the stars,
the soul to God,
my heart to yours?
This is the measure of all things...
The soul breathes life
into this vessel of clay,
but do we really know it?
We take the existence
all on faith, belief in
a sense of something
so much greater, something
encompassing the very reaches
and foundations of all.
Where do we go upon death?
Does the soul continue on,
journeying through another
life or lifetimes, like an
endless traveler walking
an endless road?
Have you ever held your
soul at arms length
and looked into its center,
gazing at the beauty of its
creation and the mystery
of its very design?
These are questions that
remain unanswered in this
mortal life time -:
Do we know in the next,
or the next, or the next?
What is the distance from
the Earth to the stars,
the soul to God,
my heart to yours?
This is the measure of all things...
I hold a child in my arms
and feel the physical connection.
The warmth, the softness,
the feeling of love -:
humanity in all its grace.
And between a man and a woman.
something deeper still,
like an infinite pool
reflecting the meaning of life.
How do you even begin
to express the thoughts
and feelings generated
by the heat of the heart?
Can one ever be enough,
enough for another?
Can surrender ever fill
the spaces between,
the hidden recess of the self?
Can love ever be strong enough
to stand the test of time?
Or will it wear away like the
mountains, carved away by
the glaciers of time;
worn down by the rushing
waters of our lives?
These questions remain
unanswered as I walk the
path of my life, as I move
into an uncertain future...
What is the distance from
the Earth to the stars,
the soul to God,
my heart to yours?
This is the measure of all things...
